In this second post of the Montessori method series, I'll explain the three period lesson, which is used to present many materials in the Montessori classroom.
The idea of the three stage lesson originated with Seguin, and his ideas were a key influence on Dr. Montessori in developing her method.
The three period lesson, in a nutshell, proceeds as follows
Introduction - naming and object or concept. This is (the sound) "c", this is "d", this is "e".
Identification - recognizing what was introduced. "Show me "c".
Cognition - remembering. "What sound is this?"
The three period lesson is an easy, organized and effective way to present new concepts, and to have the child meaningfully understand and retain that new information.
